. Author - D. S. Miller. My background is in engineering fluid dynamics. In the 70s I was involved in a number of programmes to provide design information for large flow systems. At the time experimental fluid dynamics reached its peak and went into a steep decline typical of a mature research area. Before the efforts of many researchers were effectively lost to engineering in general, I extracted data and information on flow systems from upwards of ten thousand sources (Miller 1990) for a design guide - Internal Flow Systems. A feature of Internal Flow Systems is that it only includes experimental data that meets quality criteria. The data is supported by explanations that relate component performance to flow behaviour within components and flow systems. The combination of quality data and explanations about the data has resulted in the wide adoption by companies of Internal Flow Systems for the design and simulation of flow systems. The data is at the core of the leading computer program for the design and analysis of flow systems (www.flowmaster.com). Abrasive waterjets are generated in a fluid dynamic device - cutting head - that has the most energy intensive and abrasive flows of any industrial flow device. Using my background in industrial fluid dynamics and knowledge of the literature on fluid flow I am seeking to understand abrasive waterjets and communicate this understanding. Reference
